Time. Work. Quality 🤔

Time. Work. Quality 🤔
By Sumeru Raut • Issue #7 • View online
Hi friends,
Hope you had a lovely week. I have been having a great time with family. We’re meeting for the first time in over a year.
I am spending quality time with my nephew and we are doing some fun projects together. One of them is—experiments with planting radish, beetroot, carrot and kohlrabi. We are seeing some shoots already. I’ll keep you posted.
In other news, I only published two articles this week. I struggled to finish them.
And then I stumbled upon Parkinson’s law on Twitter.
Parkinson’s law states that “work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion”.
I looked it up further (read Wikipedia) and found it obvious and interesting.
In a nut shell, the ‘law’ says that the longer you give yourself to complete a task, the bigger the task gets or the more scope there is for you to procrastinate. So deadlines become crucial.
(As for deadlines : self-imposed>>>somebody else’s>situational)
Ever since I started the blog with the idea of posting every day, I have noticed that if I give myself the option to not post, I invariably end up doing just that, not posting. This has happened 100% of the time.
And when I don’t give myself the option to miss, I post without fail.
There hasn’t necessarily been a co-relation between the amount of time available for the task and the quality of output.
I should take my own advice on deadlines.
On a broader note, getting a task done doesn’t always translate to sitting idle or relaxing. I eventually find something else to get busy with. To-do lists never seem to end.
That is Parkinson’s law at work again.
So as long as we have ‘time’, we will find something to do; we might as well do things that are singularly worthwhile to us.
Have a lovely week!

Saint Kabir on Parkinson's law
काल करे सो आज कर, आज करे सो अब ।
पल में प्रलय होएगी, बहुरि करेगा कब ॥
“Do today, what needs to be done tomorrow. Do now what needs to be done today. Doomsday will be here in a moment, when will you reply to that email?”

Word of the week: Falstaffian
Orson Welles on The Dean Martin Show
Orson Welles on The Dean Martin Show
I wanted to use the word ‘Falstaffian’ earlier this week, but didn’t feel confident. So while looking it up, I stumbled upon this lovely performance by Orson Welles.
I just can’t wait to walk into a theatre and watch a play again. It has been so darn long!
